A step deck truck is a type of truck which uses a two-tiered approach to hauling cargo. This includes an upper deck, and a lower deck.
Some step deck trucks have a double drop trailer, which has a front upper deck and a back upper deck, with the lower deck in the middle. A step deck truck is also referred to as a drop-deck flatbed truck.
A step deck trailer is a form of a flatbed trailer in that it has no sides, roof, or doors. Where a step deck differs is that it has two deck levels. The higher, shorter one is positioned closer to the front of the trailer where the tractor hitch is located. The lower, longer one makes up the rest of the trailer length.
Step deck trailers are typically considered to have a few advantages over a traditional flatbed trailer. The first concerns height permits. This is often considered the biggest advantage because you can transport higher loads, in height, without having to apply for additional permits. Their specific design allows for large loads to be positioned lower down to avoid any height restrictions.
How to load?
One of the pros of step decks and flatbeds is how easy it is to load them up. Cargo can be dropped in from overhead, the sides are easy to access, and there should be a ramp coming off the back of the trailer. This makes it easy to get cargo from one point to another, but you must know where to load your cargo for balance on the trailer to keep your truck in good working condition.
When do we use?
So what kind of freight is typically carried on step deck trailers? These trailers usually accommodate heavy machinery and freight that tends to be higher. The typical step deck truck loads include the following items:
Excavators
Tractors
Building Materials
Agricultural Materials
Other Machinery
Obviously, these items can be quite high and depending on the specific state law, they may exceed the maximum allowable height, especially for things like bridge clearance. This is where step deck trailers really come in handy.
