Intermodal transportation is a combination of two or more modes of transport in order to move cargo from a place in a country to another place in a different country. The main characteristic of intermodal transportation mode is that every part of the process is contracted with different providers.
Intermodal transportation is favored throughout the world as it offers environmental benefits such as reduced CO2, particulate matter, and N2O emissions, and lower diesel fuel consumption during this era of rapidly depleting natural resources. Intermodal transportation allows for route changes and reduces highway use. There are many significant advantages to intermodal transport: less noise pollution; more reliable delivery time notifications; elimination of traffic and customs processes on the highway; leaner planning processes; fixed departure schedules; higher quality service standards; and easier planning and support for large-scale projects.
